New doorsNot sure what you need?
Start with what the door is doing. This table covers the usual causes. You don't need to work it out yourself, though. Describe the problem when you call and we'll take it from there.
| What you notice | Common cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Loud bang from the garage, door now very heavy | Broken torsion spring | Spring repair |
| Door hangs crooked, one side lower | Loose or broken cable, or a spring problem | Cable repair |
| Rollers have popped out, door is tilted in the opening | Off-track door | Off-track repair |
| Grinding, squealing or rattling | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose hardware | Maintenance |
| Opener hums but the door doesn't move | Opener fault, or a door that's too heavy for it | Opener service |
| Door closes, then goes back up | Safety sensors blocked or out of line, or force settings | Opener troubleshooting |
| Dented panels, drafts, or a door that's just old | Time to compare repair and replacement | New doors |
Maintenance
Garage door maintenance and tune-ups
Most garage doors open and close several times a day, every day. A tune-up keeps them running smoothly and lets us catch a worn cable or tired spring before it fails at a bad moment.
Once a year is a reasonable schedule for most homes. If your door is older, very heavy or used all day, consider having it checked more often.
Our main site has a list of simple maintenance tips you can do yourself between visits. Leave the springs and cables to a technician.
A tune-up includes
- Checking door balance and spring condition
- Inspecting cables, drums and bottom brackets
- Lubricating rollers, hinges and bearings
- Tightening hinges, brackets and track bolts
- Checking track alignment and roller wear
- Testing the opener's auto-reverse and safety sensors
- Adjusting opener travel and force settings
