Garage Door Opener Repair and Replacement in Newark
Openers that hum, stall, reverse or ignore the remote. We'll inspect your opener for free, fix it when a repair makes sense, and install a new one when it doesn't.
Common opener problems
Many opener problems aren't the motor at all. Before you assume the opener is dead, check the simple things in the panel next to this. If the door still won't work, call us.
- The door closes, then goes back up
- The safety sensors near the floor are blocked, dirty or knocked out of line. Their little lights should be steady. A blinking light on the opener can point to the same thing.
- The opener hums but the door won't move
- This often means a broken spring, so the door is too heavy for the opener. Don't keep pressing the button. It can also be a stripped gear inside the opener.
- The remote stopped working but the wall button works
- Usually a dead remote battery, or the remote needs to be re-paired. Sometimes the receiver or antenna has failed.
- The door stops partway or reverses for no reason
- The travel limits or force settings may need adjusting, or the door itself is binding and the opener is protecting itself.
Quick checks you can do safely
- Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power
- Replace the remote's battery
- Check that the wall console isn't in "lock" or "vacation" mode
- Wipe the sensor lenses and clear anything in their path
- Look for a spring with a gap in it above the door
If you see a broken spring, stop here and call. Don't use the opener.
Repair or replace your opener?
We start with a free inspection. Here's how we usually decide.
Usually worth repairing
- Remote, keypad or wall-button faults
- Misaligned or damaged safety sensors
- Travel limit and force adjustments
- Loose chain or belt
- Wiring problems
Usually time for a new opener
- Stripped gears or a failing motor on an older unit
- No working safety sensors
- No battery backup
- Repeated breakdowns
- You want a quieter belt drive or smartphone control
In our experience, most older openers end up replaced. A new one costs less over time than keeping a worn-out unit running.

Opener installation
We install LiftMaster belt-drive, chain-drive and wall-mount openers. A belt drive is the quiet choice for garages under a bedroom. Chain drives are simple and tough. Wall-mount units free up the ceiling and suit garages with high or unusual ceilings.
Every opener we install comes with a battery backup, as California law requires. Before we leave, we set the travel limits and force, line up the safety sensors, pair your remotes and test the auto-reverse.

Opener questions
?Do I need a battery backup on my opener?
In California, yes, for new installs. Since July 1, 2019, state law (SB 969) has required residential openers that are sold or installed to have a battery backup that works during a power outage. Every opener we install includes one. Our main site explains what the battery backup law requires.
?Is it worth repairing an old opener?
Sometimes. A remote, a sensor or a wiring fault is often a simple fix. On older units with worn gears or a failing motor, a new opener is usually better value, because you also get modern safety features and the battery backup. We'll inspect it for free and tell you which way we'd go.
?Which opener brands do you install?
We install LiftMaster openers, including belt-drive, chain-drive and wall-mount models. See the opener options on our main site to compare them.
